The Art of Creating a Traditional Tipi: A Behind-the-Scenes Look

Tipis, those iconic canvas structures, have captured imaginations for centuries. At Hearthworks, we’ve been crafting these timeless dwellings for over 25 years, transforming raw canvas into cosy, weather-resistant homes.

The Heart of the Tipi: The Canvas

The soul of a Tipi lies in its durable canvas. We use Regentex, a robust poly-cotton blend known for its durability and weather resistance. Treated with flame-retardant and mold-inhibitor finishes, it ensures safety and longevity. Most of our Tipis are made of natural white canvas with colourful trim.

From Design to Reality

Our skilled artisans begin by understanding the client’s vision. Once the design is finalised, the sewing process begins. The front panel, featuring intricate lacing and smoke flaps, is the foundation. The remaining panels are then sewn together to form the iconic conical shape.

After the panels are joined, the Tipi is taken outside and laid out to mark the hem and peg loop positions. Once that’s done, it returns to the workshop for the final stitching, including the addition of draft-reducing storm flaps, bespoke branding and a sturdy door to finish it off.

Depending on the size and complexity, the entire process can take anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks. For example, our popular 18-foot Tipi, which comfortably sleeps six, takes about five days to complete.

Raising the Tipi

We use sturdy pine poles sourced from local, sustainable forests to create the Tipi’s central tripod. The canvas is then carefully attach

ed to the poles and staked to the ground. Strategically placed smoke flaps control airflow and ventilation.

Customising Your Tipi

To enhance your Tipi experience, consider adding a liner for extra warmth, a rain catcher or rain hat for weather protection, and a heavy-duty groundsheet with coir matting to keep out the damp.

A Legacy of Craftsmanship

Each Hearthworks Tipi is a testament to our commitment to quality and tradition. We ensure every detail is perfect, from the initial design to the final stitch. Whether you are seeking a serene retreat or a practical outdoor shelter, a Hearthworks Tipi is the ideal choice.
